Packing House Café sits quietly within the historic Middleport Pottery on Port Street, shaping itself as a calm and inviting spot for a casual coffee or a relaxed lunch in Stoke-on-Trent. As a café, it’s particularly known for its quality coffee, which draws regulars—especially local workers and pottery visitors—looking for a reliable mid-morning or lunchtime break.

The atmosphere here leans into its unique setting: a pottery factory outlet where you can enjoy your drink or meal while surrounded by artisanship. Most of the crockery, like the Burleigh cups and saucers, is made right on site, adding a grounded, local touch to the experience that you don’t often find in chain cafés. This connection to Middleport Pottery gives the café a character that’s both nostalgic and genuine.

The food is straightforward but well-regarded among visitors. Vegetarians will find thoughtful choices—like the vegetarian sausage bap and cheese oatcakes—which are complemented by popular comfort options such as hearty soups and cheese toasties. The café also serves afternoon tea by prebooking, which appeals to those wanting a more leisurely, sit-down experience later in the day.

Most visitors come during usual daytime opening hours, 10am to 4pm, with lunch periods appearing particularly busy as locals and pottery shoppers stop by for a satisfying bite and a strong coffee. The staff are noted for being friendly and welcoming, which makes the café feel familiar without ever being rushed.

While the environment is calm and casual, some elements like older cup and saucer sets and simpler teas may stand out to those with more refined tastes in tableware or beverages. Still, these details add to the authentic, lived-in charm of a working pottery site rather than a slick, modern café.

In summary, Packing House Café is for anyone who values a decent coffee, uncomplicated but thoughtful food options, and a setting rooted deeply in Stoke’s artisanal heritage. It fits well as a lunch spot for people working locally or a peaceful pause for visitors exploring Middleport Pottery’s fascinating surroundings.

Good food, and very good coffee. Obviously a popular place for lunch and the soup and cheese toastie went down a treat. Thank you.

You can have simple tea served in a Burleigh cup and saucer. Located in the factory shop, the atmosphere is calm and nice. But the tea was average, cup and saucers were a bit old.

Best coffee in Stoke! I come here weekly on my lunch break. Friendly staff, good selection for vegetarian food and all served on beautiful Burleigh pottery, which is all made here on site. I’d recommend the vegetarian sausage bap, tea cakes or cheese oatcakes but lots of options, local delicacies and specials. Open every day 10am-4pm they also do Afternoon Tea which you need to pre-book. Lovely to sit outside by the canal in summer. Dog and kids allowed. Highly recommend. Toilets and parking is free too.

We found this in the book The Extra Mile and we weren’t disappointed! Friendly staff , delicious carrot cake and a large hot pot of tea for 2 all served in Burleigh cups and saucers . We saw others being g served huge dishes of soup ! I just wish we’d had more time to spend looking around and eat more of the super foods . Thank you - your hospitality made our long journey much more memorable.

Really nice place. Came for a cooked breakfast the other week. The sausage and bacon was without doubt some of the tastiest sausage and bacon I've had in an age. Absolutely incredible! Where did you get them because they were amazing!

The soup and toast were tasty, and my kids enjoyed them too. I recommend the outdoor seats where you can eat while looking at the canal. I really liked the cute tableware, so I bought a cup and saucer at the factory shop.
